Organization: University of Pennsylvania
Jeffrey Draine, an Associate Professor at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Social Work, is a mental health services researcher associated with the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research.
Dr. Draine also co-directs the Center for Mental Health Services and Criminal Justice Research , an NIMH funded research center based at Rutgers University, which includes an NIMH and NIDA funded post doctoral training program housed at both Rutgers and Penn.
Dr. Draine studies the intersection of mental illness with the criminal justice system. Integrating a public health perspective with research on criminal justice processes, he examines how policy and practice impact community inclusion of people with mental illness who come in contact with the law.
He is currently undertaking an NIMH funded study of Critical Time Intervention (CTI) for men with mental illness moving out of New Jersey Prisons and into Camden. CTI demonstrated effectiveness for people leaving large homeless shelters and moving into community settings. This is among the first tests of CTI for people leaving prison.
Dr. Draine’s emerging projects include examinations of police decisions and police-based intervention regarding people with mental illness in Chicago and Philadelphia and reentry services for people leaving jail with HIV.
Dr. Draine is the Co-investigator for the following RRTC Research Project:
"A mixed methods study of the community living needs of individuals with psychiatric disabilities who are newly released from jail"
