In October 2003, the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) awarded a five-year Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) to create the University of Pennsylvania Collaborative on Community Integration of Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities, providing support for a broad range of innovative research activities and targeted training projects to assist in the development and the delivery of community integration services and supports for individuals with psychiatric disabilities.

This report provides an overview of each of the nine research projects completed by the UPenn Collaborative in its first five years of activity. The research undertaken in the 2003 – 2008 period has made major contributions to the field’s understanding of community participation, and paved the way for further study as part of the UPenn Collaborative’s current NIDRR/RRTC research activities (2008 – 2013).
